What is Person Centred Counselling?
Counselling in a nutshell is a talking/listening exchange between two people, one the counsellor, the other, the client, who is a person that is looking to make a change in their life. There are many different types of counselling available. Person Centered Counselling works on the premise that you, the client, are the expert in your own life and that the sessions are led by you, at your own pace. The role of the counsellor is to work collaboratively with you. A non-judgmental, honest, empathetic safe space is provided by the counsellor to enable exploration and to bring about any changes that you desire in your life.
This is established through a therapeutic client/counsellor relationship and a level of commitment is required to maintain this. In general, a counsellor does not offer advice, but encourages you to find your own solutions to any issues through exploration and supports you to do this. The counsellor does not offer a diagnosis. Essentially, it is a safe space that you can use to discuss whatever you need to.
All our experiences make us who we are. Some situations can lead to disruption in our lives that prevent us from being our true authentic selves and living our best lives. None of us have immunity from painful experiences. The more that we try to ignore the hurt and pain we are experiencing, the longer it will be present in our lives, manifesting itself in various ways. Counselling is not a magical fix that will make painful situations go away instantly. As stated above, it is a journey in which you will find your own solutions supported by the counsellor. It is not selfish in any way to make time to work on yourself, we all deserve to be living our best lives. I tell my clients often; you can’t give from an empty cup!
Who is Person Centred Counselling for?
There will be no judgement here from HealingwithJade on you as a person, or what you bring to your counselling sessions. There are no specific issues that cannot be addressed in counselling. If there is something that is troubling you within your life and having an impact on your living experience on a daily basis, then it's definitely worth exploring to see if person centred counselling can help you. It can be a very empowering healing experience to be ‘seen and heard’ for perhaps the first time in your life.
If there are any instances where person centred counselling might not feel suitable for you, I will do my utmost to help you find alternative support. At HealingwithJade, I do not offer crisis or emergency support. If you are experiencing an emergency and think you are at risk of harming yourself, please contact 999, your GP, NHS 111 or the Samaritans on 116 123 which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week all year round.
What to Expect
After making initial contact, we will arrange a free 30-minute consultation using your preferred method (telephone or zoom), from which I will gather basic information. We will discuss how counselling works, the counselling agreement and may also complete assessment forms. You will be then given the opportunity to discuss why you have decided to have counselling. We can get an idea of how we will work together and whether counselling is right for you.
I always suggest to clients after a consultation and subsequent sessions to ‘reflect’. How did I feel during and after the consultation/session? Did I feel comfortable, safe, understood and did I feel like I was listened to? You can have an open and honest conversation with me if anything comes up for you, so we can work to resolve whatever the issue is.
If you are happy to begin after your considerations from the consultation, we then will arrange a specific slot for you. There is no pressure at all to book sessions after the consultation. Full details about the service will be given at the consultation. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
